Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of ‘o-rings’ to hold the main archwire in place. Insead, a specialized clip takes the place of the ‘o-rings’. Early in treatment, the clip helps reduce the amount of friction between the small archwires that are used with the brackets. Later in treatment, the clips force larger archwires fully into the brackets to obtain the tooth movement that is required to obtain an ideal bite. Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets.
